Mares Nemo Excel Dive Computer

June 22, 2009 by admin

mares-nemo-excel-dive-computerIf you’re looking for a sleek, watch-style computer with all the great features of a good dive computer, the Mares Nemo Excel is a good choice. Perfect for recreational diving, the Excel is similar to the original Nemo with a few added features. It includes tougher components used for extreme durability, shaped strap to fit comfortably on your wrist and an upgraded display for increased digit readability.

Here are the product specifications of the Mares Nemo Excel:

  • 4 Button (Easy Access)
  • 4 Dive Modes: Air, Nitrox, Bottom time, and the special Freedive function
  • Intense backlighting on demand
  • Dual time setting

Click here for more information about the Mares Nemo Excel.

Leisurepro.com is offering a 14% price drop on the Nemo Excel. Its available at a sale price of $599.95.

According to scubadiving.com’s review, the Mares Nemo Excel has a clever ascent rate monitor, easy to read graphics, big control buttons and the Mares-Wienke RGBM algorithm was consistent on being one of the most conservative in regard to bottom time.

Here are what divers, professional and recreational alike, have to say about their dive experience using the Mares Nemo Excel:

This is a very nice computer package! I bought this as a backup to my Mares Nemo Wide. The options/functions, menu, setup are the same as the Nemo Wide just in a smaller package. If you liked the Nemo Wide but want a backup or a smaller package this is what to buy. – Chris of San Diego, CA

Got one these over the holidays from the LDS and made four dives with while on vacation in Puerto Rico. I compared it with my regular computer, Genesis React Pro. By the end of the second dive I found myself referring to the Nemo Excel exclusively. It is easy to read and tells you everything at a glance. I do not feel the RGBM algorithm was limiting in bottom time as compared to the Haldanian model in use by Genesis, when I had 4 minutes left at depth on Nemo, I was on my second caution diamond on the React Pro, I generally make it a point to avoid going into the caution area of the React Pro, so in my case everything comes down to ergonomics and ease of use when comparing the two. To both computers credit they were in prefect agreement at all times in terms of bottom time and depth. To top it off, you just can’t beat the ruggedness and looks of the Nemo Excel. – cdiver of High Point, NC

Have you used the Nemo Excel in your dive? We’d love to hear from you.

Suunto Cobra 2 Dive Computer Review

Suunto Cobra 2 Dive Computer

The Suunto Cobra 2 is a state-of-the art air-integrated dive computer that combines cutting edge technology with a compact design feature. It includes a built-in electronic compass with tilt sensor and matrix display. Suunto Cobra 2 uses deep stop RGBM algorithm to track and predict absorption rates. This allows the diver to decide whether to make safety stops or deep stops depending on the dive situation.
The Suunto Cobra 2 has undergone rigorous testing at Scubadiving.com’s Scuba Lab. The verdict: they liked the compact design and the digital compass feature. In fact, when asked if they would change anything, they replied, “Not a thing.”

Let’s take a closer look at Suunto Cobra 2’s features.

  • Air integrated
  • 3 modes: Air, Nitrox, Gauge
  • Matrix display
  • Digital compass with tilt-recognition ability
  • Automatic decompression calculations
  • Audible and visual alarms
  • Tracks remaining air pressure and air consumption rates
  • Provides digital dive profiling
  • 42 hour logbook
  • 5000 PSI (300 bar) compatible
  • Safety stop countdown timer
  • Backlight
  • User-replaceable battery
  • Maximum depth alarm
  • Automatic altitude adjustment
  • Metric or imperial display

In addition, the Cobra 2 allows you to log and store 42 hours of dive time and with a little adjustment, you can extend it up to 128 hours of logs. Cool, isn’t it?
At Leisurepro.com, the Suunto Cobra 2 is available at a sale price of $549.95. Its original price was $950. That’s a huge 42% reduction!

Here are some of the actual customer reviews of the Suunto Cobra 2:
“The Suunto Cobra II is a very compact, feature-laden diving computer which allows for as good deal of personal adjustment, including establishing more conservative diving profiles, the changing of gases for those who require it, as well as adjusting or eliminating audible alarms (which I absolutely loathe). The one feature most commonly criticized in the Cobra 2 is that of the digital compass, which will only display a given bearing when tilted 5˚ or less from level; but such complaints are spurious, and if you’re so terribly concerned about your underwater bearings, keeping a compass at level is already your best bet . “ – Loligo of San Francisco, CA
“I enjoy this computer, one of the easier computers to use on the market. This computer collects a lot of dive data as well as calculates dive times very accurately. The only downfall that I find to the computer is the built in compass. It is a pain to switch the screen to get to the compass especially for the Northwest where viz is poor. I added a compass to make it easier to navigate and view my console information at the same time. The added compass isn’t that bad though.” Ryan of Portland, OR

Have you used the Suunto Cobra 2 in your dives? We’d love to your feedback.

“The computer works well and is easy to use. The instructions are very clear. The features are similar to other air integrated computers. The optional computer download cable is a bit spendy. LeisurePro had the absolute best price when I bought this computer. It came nicely assembled with the reg/octo/1st stage package I purchased. It is compact and stows very well. User replaceable batteries are easy to replace.” — Tundra Bandit of Richland, WA

“I brought this item for my 11 year old son. He has no problems using it. For a recreational diver, this has all the features that you might want. I would strongly recommend an air integrated unit, and this has all the features that you need for a good price. It is functionally equivalent to the Sherwood Wisdom, except for a modified display. We’ve used it on 20+ salt and freshwater dives without a problem.” – Bob of San Antonio, TX
